Current interpretation of the state's Beverage Containers Deposit statutes provides for an exemption for personal use. Wine in a daily amount not to exceed 576 fluid ounces (4.5 gallons or 17034.35 ml or twenty two 750 ml containers) may be shipped into the state. (¶8008; Code of Iowa§455C.5).

Effective July 1, 1996, a winery licensed or permitted pursuant to laws regulating alcoholic beverages in a state which affords this state an equal reciprocal shipping privilege may ship into this state by private common carrier, to a person twenty-one years of age or older, not more than eighteen liters of wine per month, for consumption or use by the person (HF 2315, effective July 1, 1996).
